Administration, Purchasing and IT 

Niobec’s Administration, Purchasing and IT Department relies on the expertise of employees from various sectors to support all other departments in the accomplishment of their activities. Whether researching successful partnerships, monitoring the compliance to financial and legal requirements, procuring adequate equipment for all departments or developing and maintaining IT resources, the hard work of these people contributes to each stage of the mine development and ensures that it remains competitive.

Continuous Improvement

The Continuous Improvement Department allows the Niobec mine to perfect its methods and in so doing, it ensures a constant monitoring of opportunities for developing improvement projects at all stages of production. Well-known tools, such as 5S, KAIZEN and the Six Sigma methodology are used. This team, which also applies international ISO 9001 : 2008 standards, is constantly working on innovative and stimulating projects. Niobec’s success is, among other things, based upon its capacity to pursue its development and innovation efforts through the years.

Mill and Converter

The team at Niobec’s concentration mill uses the most complex and sophisticated mineral recovery processes in the world to extract the pyrochlore concentrate used to manufacture the final product, ferroniobium (FeNb). As for the conversion of the niobium concentrate, it is performed on site by way of thermite reaction. Every day, each employee of this demonstrate innovation, precision and professionalism to maintain the high quality of ferroniobium which, once crushed to sizes specified by each steel plant and packaged in 10-to-1,500 kg packages, is shipped worldwide.

Communications

The Communications Department fosters relationships with all of Niobec’s stakeholders, namely its employees, suppliers, partner and the community in its entirety. The new Communications Department that will be located in the heart of the community of St-Honoré will manage internal communications, external communication, media relations, community relations, and the donations and sponsorship programme. The Communications Advisors ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental policies, as well as with the laws, regulations and ethical standards that govern the Niobec mine. This Department is in charge of communicating all relevant information regarding the corporation and ensuring that strong relationships are maintained with the members of its community.

Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance 

Niobec’s mining and metallurgic complex includes several facilities and specialised equipment, and the responsibility for their maintenance and for ensuring they remain in good working condition falls upon the Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance team. This team ensures that all employees work in a safe and well-adapted environment and works constantly towards the increasing of the facilities reliability. Maintaining tools and all the machinery in good working condition, manage all preventive electrical and mechanical maintenance work, performing regular, major and urgent repairs – these are all duties that the members of this fulfill on a daily basis, and all Niobec employees can count on them!

Engineering and Geology 

The Engineering and Geology Department of the Niobec mine plans, designs and performs the development of sites, namely the drilling, blasting and underground infrastructures, based in the geological data obtained during diamond drilling. Exploration is comprised of several activities, such as diamond drilling, which is to determine the potential of lenses, and definition drilling, which is used to determine the niobium grade. Once the deposit has been located and well defined, the team then proceeds to choosing an economic and safest method for extracting ore.

Control Laboratory

The control laboratory personnel performs over 100,000 analyses annually to ensure control and quality assurance at Niobec. Having received an ISO 9001:2008 accreditation, Niobec relies on the Control Laboratory, which uses certified standards and the most sophisticated equipment in order to perform chemical analyses of samples throughout the process, thus maintaining the quality levels of the corporation’s products.

Human Resources, Organizational Development and Training

The Human Resources, Organizational Development and Training team supports the entire mine’s departments. Its objective consists in ensuring the corporation’s longevity through constant research for new talent, the development of the corporation’s staff and the harmonious management of work relations. In order to promote Niobec’s outreach, this team also conveys the corporate identity to current and future employees, and transforms the corporation’s employees into first-class ambassadors!

Health and Safety and Sustainable Development

Furthermore, they contribute to the continuous improvement of the corporation’s performance in terms of environmental responsibility and ensure the application of the corporation’s health and safety and sustainable development policies on a daily basis. Underground

The team of workers of the Underground Department is at the heart of Niobec’s mining and development activities. In addition to participating to many exploration stages, such as diamond drilling and definition drilling, it performs mine development work. This team also carries out production, i.e. production drilling and blasting, as well as drawing and loading ore. The underground mine is operated 24 hours a day, and seven days a week. It extracts over 2.3 million tons of ore that, once processed, allow the production of some 5.9 million kg of niobium annually. The primary crushing takes place underground. Then, the ore is lifted to the surface where secondary crushing takes place. The ore can then be shipped to the mill, and subsequently to the converter.
